The Strangest Thing
If you live in Boston, and you don't have a car, you can't buy furniture. It's not that you can't bring it home yourself. You can't even look at it. There are no normal furniture resellers anywhere on the urban landscape. You have to drive out to the big boxes.

it's true; your options are as limited as they are unpleasant. you might be able to take the logan express bus out to framingham and get to jordan's. i suspect that this is the reason that the ikea in stoughton has a very visible partnership with zipcar, going so far as to have special parking spots for them (this is a big deal indeed on a weekend).
good luck...
we just moved apartments in the north end but didn't have as much trouble. Sure we had to use a zipcar for any ikea trips, but for nicer stuff we got an excellent sofa from 'boston interiors' which is a short walk from the brookline village stop on the D-line (in fact the tracks are adjacent to the store)
and surprisingly we bought a really great bed from mattress discounters or something like that in downtown crossing.
both delivered all the way up to our 5th floor apartment
There's a whole row of furniture stores on Mass. Ave. in Cambridge, about halfway between Central and Harvard squares.
Ron, those are fine if you want a $2000 plastic couch. I just want a sofa!
If it doesn't need to be new, check out the MIT Furniture exchange.

two important words.
ZIP CAR
Jennifer Furniture sells sofas (Porter Square and Boylston St are their urban locations)
There's a Bernie and Phil's not too far from the Wellington T-stop in Everett. About a 10-minute bus ride. Probably the closest you'll get.
I agree that it's hard to find decent furniture (here or elsewhere) but you don't need a car to get it. Even for less-expensive stuff. Most places will deliver (sometimes for a fee, sometimes not.) Either way, though-- it's going to be expensive.
Harvard Ave in Allston has a huge selection of furniture places for budget shoppers; especially check the resale places there. (There was one in Harvard Sq. but I think it's moved-- anyone know?
There's the Door Store on Mass Ave near Harvard, Dream On Futon in Central on River St. just off Mass; Plus there's another store in Central at the corner of Pearl St. and Mass Ave I can't remember the name of.
My favorite is the Organic Furniture Cellar, which is open only on Saturdays from September to June, and closed other times. They'll cut you a deal on delivery if you buy more than one or two things. They specialize in wood furniture made in the US in the first half of the 20th century.
The Crate and Barrel in Central Sq. on Mass Ave also has a 4th-floor closeout area that can be good for bargains.
And finally, if you really want to go out to the big-box stores, there's Zipcar-- they even have a special deal with Ikea.
It's hard to find good, not to expensive furniture in Boston. Creiagslist is an option- you might ahve to rent a UHaul, but it could be worth it.
Boston Wood (www.bostonwood.com) at Packards corner on Commonwealth Ave makes great custom pieces for really cheap! I bought two 7ft tall bookshelves for $400 and they only charged $25 for delivery!
This won't help you with a couch, but it was the best furniture deal I've found in Boston, so I thought I'd share
