F. Star Market

No one seems to realize how overpriced Star Market in Porter Square is. I guess it has something to do with the clientele: yuppies who will pay whatever things cost. I stopped in to buy orange juice last night. A carafe of OJ usually costs $2.50. Not here. $4.69.

That's an additional 88% for nothing (except, maybe, "convenience"). I call it the Cute Yuppie or People Watching Surcharge. But we all know that Market Basket has better peoplewatching, and we all know orange juice should not cost $4.69.

It's not the people-watching, but the being-watched that matters, right? Watching people is amusing, sure, but being seen can have real payoffs. Paying $4.69 for OJ that usually costs under $3 is a form of status signaling that may even pay dividends if you're, say, looking for a high-status mate. Of course, our indebted society tends to encourage people to live beyond their means so maybe most customers are aspirational, and living a lie.
And not to put on my interrogation hat, but what's a yuppie these days?
Is it one of these obscenity-like, "I know it when I see it" things?
Can you still be a yuppie if you're a young, urban, professional who is also unobnoxious, interested in the surrounding community, and relatively indifferent to status climbing?
Probably not given the deeply entrenched derogatory connotations of the term. What, then, do we call a conscientious and respectful young, urban, professional?
A hopeless bourgois sap?
