Just not fitting in at all
This morning NPR started its series on 18-25 year old Leaders of the Future (ugh, still fitting into this group). The interviewee spoke of how "our generation" had always been "showered with confidence" so that we believed "we were our own special snowflake" (!!!). Now I know he didn't speak for all of us, but why is what he said being repeatedly applied to this generation? Truthfully, in college, 10 out of 10 kids I met matched that description. I guess I'm just not meeting enough like-minded white trash in my line of living.

Apparently, ten years or so ago, a big movement took up parenting. Namely, that kids are flipping out, a la Columbine, because the world is too tough, and they don't feel loved. To counterbalance that, an overemphasis was put on communicating to your child that s/he is loved and special no matter what. Unfortunately, that meant gratuitous approval, which makes loads of kids feel entitled. The key is BALANCE, people!
I remember widespread angst and disillusionment coming out of college. I don't remember stories about our generation being especially snowflaky, but I do remember stories about our generation (well, graduating class, anyway) being the most educated, ambitious, unemployed people ever. Or, if employed, having competed for horrific starting salaries. Is it possible that our Future Leader friend, like leaders past and present, has been told he's a special aristocratic snowflake?

Part of me is glad to be just ahead of that generation. I'm so dang old, and only 27. Fuckit. Grouping people is stupid and you know it.
It *seems* that the snowflakes are the ones that run the news. And academia. And government. Business, too. Few things seem to change around here. BTW I missed today's future leader piece due to bad gas. Maybe I can stream it.
who wants to be special?
