I've spent a lot of quality time on Photopermit.org this week. It's a great blog devoted to photographers' civil liberties, featuring a forum rife with photog's tales of run-ins with misinformed police personnel as well as rent-a-cops and other civilian "vigilantes."
Know your rights. You can take pictures of anything or anyone anywhere, as long as you're not trespassing.

yeah, and as long as homeless people from vancouver to nashville and in between don't threaten you for doing so
have them arrested for harrassment. at least they'll get a free meal out of it.
